Now, new research shows that olive oil can also help prevent brain cancer.
A study conducted by researchers from the University of Edinburgh in England found that oleic acid - a monounsaturated fatty acid present in olive oil, is able to stop the activity of a protein that triggers the formation of cancer in brain cells.
Although not yet able to say that olive oil in the diet helps prevent brain cancer, the findings suggest that oleic acid may support the production of tumor suppressor molecules in cells that grow in the laboratory.

Oleic acid is one of the nutritional groups known as fatty acids that stimulate the production of cell molecules. Previous research has shown that oleic acid can inhibit the activity of specific disease-causing diseases.
With this in mind, the researchers also investigated how the olive oil compound affects the activity of the miR-7 protein, a microRNA that plays a role in suppressing the tumor formation process. This microRNA production is inhibited by another protein called MSI2. If this happens prolonged, it is not impossible that a tumor will form.
To achieve their findings, the researchers examined the effect of oleic acid on human and living cell extracts in the laboratory. As a result, they found that oleic acid inhibited MSI2 activity. Thus, the production of miR-7 can take place and tumor growth can be suppressed.
